AMERICA'S SECOND HARVEST RECIEVES $300,000 KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT GRANT FROM THE DANIELS FUND

CHICAGO --- January 31, 2008 --- America’s Second Harvest—The Nation’s Food Bank Network today announced that it has received a $300,000 Daniels Fund grant to support its new Knowledge Management System.
America’s Second Harvest is the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. It annually provides more than two billion pounds of food and grocery products to 25 million Americans at risk of hunger through a network of 205 food banks.
“The grant will help us develop and implement a new information-sharing system that will transform the way our network collaborates,” said Vicki Escarra, president and chief executive officer of America’s Second Harvest. “It will help us build efficiencies that will help us feed more people.”
The Daniels Fund operates the Daniels Fund Scholarship Program and the Daniels Fund Grants Program in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. The fund was established in 1997 by Bill Daniels, a pioneer in cable television known for his kindness and generosity to those in need.
There are significant efficiencies to be gained from connecting food banks with one another in new ways. America’s Second Harvest was recently recognized in the Stanford Social Innovation Review as a high-impact nonprofit because of its success in “nurturing nonprofit networks.” Based on research in the sector, the authors conclude that high-impact nonprofits recognized that sharing information and expertise is in an organization’s best interests for growth and impact.
