America's Second Harvest Partners with ABF U-Pack Moving® to Help "Send Childhood Hunger Packing"

U-Pack A BackPack Initiative Designed to Fight Child Hunger

CHICAGO -- September 10, 2007 ---   America’s Second Harvest—The Nation’s Food Bank Network today announced a new partnership with ABF U-Pack Moving to create awareness and raise funds to fight child hunger through a virtual food drive.

The goal of the U-Pack A BackPack initiative is to provide one million pounds of food to children at risk of hunger.

More than 12 million American children live in food insecure households, which means that they do not always know where they will find their next meal.Research shows that when a child receives inadequate nutrition, for even a brief period of time, both physical growth and brain development may be impaired.

At www.U-PackaBackPack.org, potential donors can learn more about the program and donate directly to local America’s Second Harvest food banks that are fighting childhood hunger on a daily basis.

“The America’s Second Harvest Network provides approximately 16 meals for every dollar donation we receive,” said Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of America’s Second Harvest. “This is a virtual cousin of a traditional food drive. The virtual nature of this initiative assures the highest impact in the fight against childhood hunger.”

Donations will be tracked by zip code to insure that all contributions stay in the community in which they were made.

All donations will help local America’s Second Harvest food banks and food-rescue organizations provide food to children and their families in their communities.

The initiative also includes a “Haul Across America” tour to gather and publicize local stories about the positive impact of food banks on individual lives.

America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network is the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the country with more than 200 Member food banks and food-rescue organizations serving all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The Network supports approximately 50,000 local charitable agencies operating more than 90,000 programs including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, after-school programs and Kids Cafes. Last year they provided food assistance to more than 25 million people in the United States. For more on the America’s Second Harvest Network, please visit www.secondharvest.org.
