Jewelry Television donation helps food and water get to disaster
victims
CHICAGO --- September 2, 2005 --- Jewelry
Television and America's Second Harvest – The Nation's Food Bank Network have
partnered to help bring desperately needed relief to the victims of Hurricane
Katrina. From Thursday, September 1, through Sunday, September 4, Jewelry
Television will be donating 5% of their proceeds to help America’s Second
Harvest deliver the food and water so critically needed to the disaster area.
Jewelry Television also donated $10,000 in bottled water, and will be directing
financial donations through their website for viewers who would like to
contribute to the relief efforts.
More than 37 truckloads from around the country are carrying over 1.1 million pounds of food and grocery product to America's Second Harvest food banks located in disaster stricken areas. The food banks will collect the supplies and pack them into relief boxes for distribution to the more than 250 emergency shelters in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida and surrounding states where more than 500,000 evacuees are expected to arrive in the coming days.
"This partnership with Jewelry Television will help thousands of victims," said Robert Forney, President and CEO of America's Second Harvest. "We are grateful for their outpouring of support in this time of need."
"Jewelry Television is a company with a philanthropic spirit. This is one of
the worst disasters in our nation's history and we knew our employees and
customers would want to get involved," said Bill Kouns, President of Jewelry
Television. "Our network reaches more than 70 million U.S. households and we're
honored to promote the mission of America's Second Harvest to viewers across the
country."
It is estimated that the response needs in Alabama, Florida,
Louisiana and Mississippi will take months of intense work. The America's Second
Harvest national office is coordinating efforts to amass donations of food and
water and emergency supplies to facilities in the Gulf Coast. In response
to Hurricane Dennis earlier this season, companies donated more than 480,000
pounds of food and grocery product to affected areas. During the 2004
hurricanes that hit the southeast, an unprecedented 7 million pounds of food,
water, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, diapers and baby formula were
donated to the America's Second Harvest Network to assist hurricane victims in
nine states and Puerto Rico.
