Client Data

During a data collection period in early 2001, more than 32,000 face-to-face client interviews were conducted. Each 20-25 minute interview provided detailed demographic information on clients’ income, housing status, family size, food procurement habits, and usage of emergency food services to provide a comprehensive profile of the people who receive food assistance at soup kitchens, pantries, and shelters.

Among the key findings was the startling fact that 23.3 million Americans are served annually by our network of service providers. This is an increase of 9% over the number we were serving when we last conducted such a study in 1997. Thirty-nine percent of the people we now serve are children and 11% are seniors. Nearly 63% (62.8) have attained high school diplomas or above and 39% of households include at least one employed adult.

The individuals' stories paint an accurate picture of the prevalence and pervasiveness of hunger in this country: their stories told us of adults who, despite full-time jobs, struggle to feed their children, senior citizens who must make choices between prescription medication and food, and of children who don’t eat for an entire day because of a lack of food in the household.
