Agency Data

During a data collection period in early 2001, nearly 24,000 local emergency hunger-relief agencies completed survey questionnaires, totaling an overall response rate of 77.4 percent.

Food banks and food-rescue organizations in the America's Second Harvest Network distributed 1.4 billion pounds of food in 2000. Although we distributed more food in 2001 than we did in 1997, demand has still increased. Sixty-seven percent of food pantries and 75% of soup kitchens told us that the overwhelming threat they face in 2001 is a lack of funding; more than a third cited a lack of adequate food stocks to meet current demand, let alone to meet an increase in requests for help.
