"At Wal-Mart, we work to assist the communities we serve the best way we can," said Margaret McKenna, president of the Wal-Mart Foundation. "Through our partnership with Feeding America, we are feeding families in need in our communities all across America. Over the years, our customers and associates have shown they are passionate about supporting food banks, and we at Wal-Mart are proud to assist them."
Wal-Mart is a generous partner of Feeding America, supporting us through the BackPack Program and capacity building initiatives. Currently operating in 40 states and Washington, D.C., Wal-Mart’s ongoing effort provides nutritious food to nearly 70,000 disadvantaged school children on weekends and holidays. As a result of Wal-Mart’s 2006 donation of nearly $1.5 million, 492,000 backpacks were filled with approximately 3 million pounds of food for children in need.
In addition, the support will also be used for nutritious food and produce programs, delivery of items to food banks, and the expansion of Feeding America’s existing Store Donation Program.
“Our mission at Wal-Mart is helping people live better. More than 1.4 million associates in 4,000 stores and clubs across the U.S. are committed to that purpose every day. Together with Feeding America, we help fight hunger in the communities we serve through financial assistance and the donation of food. We recognize the responsibility -- and the opportunity -- we have to make a real difference for so many who are in need and look forward to a continued partnership for a long time to come.”
